Your Skin Has Been Working Hard This Summer

There are certain things we come to expect this time of year: cookouts, beach walks, more time at the park… Nearly all of it revolves around being outdoors. With our long New England winters, we happily accept summer's invitation to spend more time outside.

And that means our skin is out there too.

Over the past few weeks, we've noticed a common thread among many of the clients coming in for facials. Whether they're local or visiting for a few days, their skin is often asking for the same thing: a chance to recover.

Most often, it's simply the accumulation of a season well spent.

Sunscreen layered on and reapplied throughout the day. Salt water. Chlorine. Wind. Air conditioning. Long drives. Less water than we'd normally drink. More sun than we realize. Even the excitement of summer itself, with its later nights and fuller schedules, can leave our skin feeling a little depleted.

Sometimes that shows up as dryness, tightness, or minor inflammation. Sometimes it's congestion that seems to appear out of nowhere. Other times, skin simply looks a little dull or feels more reactive than usual.

None of this is unusual. In fact, it's exactly what we'd expect to see in July in Maine.

What We're Seeing in the Treatment Room This Summer

One thing we often remind clients is that healthy skin requires that we pay attention to its changing needs. We don't necessarily need another serum or an entirely new skincare routine, for that matter. We simply need a reset, and that can come in a variety of forms.

Summer is a season of protection. We wear more sunscreen, seek shade when we can, and do our best to protect against the sun's effects. That's all important. But there's another part of summer skincare that sometimes gets overlooked as our calendars fill up: restoration.

Just as our bodies appreciate a slower morning after a busy weekend, our skin benefits from an opportunity to reset.

Quiet spa space at The Fifth Om holistic wellness spa

That's one of the reasons we love our Elevated Facials this time of year. Every facial begins with an assessment of what's happening that day, because no two complexions walk through our door exactly alike. One person may need deep hydration after a week at the beach. Another may benefit from gently lifting away sunscreen buildup and congestion. Someone else may simply need an hour to slow down while their skin receives thoughtful, personalized care.

You may have noticed that before your facial even begins, we spend a few minutes talking. What does your skin need today? What do you love in a facial? What don't you love in a facial? How have you been feeling lately? Those conversations matter because they help us tailor every treatment to the person in front of us rather than following the exact same routine every time.

Our role is to meet you (and your skin!) where you’re at.

If you've noticed your skin feeling a little different this summer, you're certainly not alone. In many ways, that's simply evidence of a season being fully lived.

Sometimes the best thing you can do isn't add something new. It’s to give your skin the opportunity to recover.

Resoration looks different for everyone. We recently wrote about how restoration can benefit the body through massage, and summer skincare is simply another part of caring for yourself seasonally.

Throughout the rest of the summer, we'll be sharing more observations from our treatment rooms, answering common skincare questions, and offering practical tips for caring for your skin through the season. We hope you'll follow along.

And if your skin has been telling you it could use a little attention, we'd love to welcome you in for a personalized facial here at The Fifth Om in Kennebunk.

For the Ones Who Nurture Everyone Else

Mother’s Day is more than brunch reservations and a thoughtful card.

For some, that’s enough.
For many, it’s more complicated than that.

Without always naming it directly, this time of year can bring up grief, longing, pressure, change, or the quiet weight of caring for everyone else first.

At The Fifth Om, our intention this Mother’s Day is to honor all nurturers — especially the ones who rarely receive nurturance themselves.

If you’ve read this far, that may be you.

Maybe you are the person everyone leans on.
Maybe you hold space for others every day: children, partners, friends, students, neighbors, clients, parents.

That kind of care matters.

And it isn’t limited by gender or parenthood. Some of the most nurturing people are simply the ones who notice when someone else is struggling before anyone says a word.

We think about this every May because we see it every day inside our spa. Every person who walks through our doors carries a different story.

We see the ones who carry others.

That kind of presence is beautiful. But it also requires restoration.

You won’t hear us say you “deserve to be pampered.” That language has never reflected what The Fifth Om is about.

What we do believe is this: the body needs care too. The nervous system needs support. Rest is not indulgent, it is necessary.

Here’s what we recommend when words feel unnecessary and your body simply needs care:

Heat helps.
Thirty quiet minutes in the infrared sauna. No notifications. No conversations. No one asking anything from you. Sometimes that kind of stillness is the treatment.

Touch helps.
Integrative massage and intentional bodywork that allow your body to soften, reset, and reconnect. Every practitioner at The Fifth Om brings a deeply intuitive and individualized approach to care.

Skincare helps.
An hour where someone pays close attention to you while you release the responsibility of paying attention to everything else. Thoughtful touch, restorative skincare, and botanical products that engage the senses in all the right ways.

The sequence matters.
But the deeper shift often happens the moment you give yourself permission to rest.

This May, we are holding space for nurturers in all forms.

For the ones celebrating.
For the ones grieving.
For the ones showing up for brunch.
For the ones quietly carrying more than anyone realizes.

And for the ones who need nurturance too.

We’re here when you’re ready.

Winter Burnout in Maine: 7 Nervous System Patterns (and How to Reset at The Fifth Om)

Winter in Maine is a season of extremes. The landscape settles into a deep freeze, while the pace of life often does the opposite, accelerating week after week until “survival mode” becomes autopilot.

At The Fifth Om Wellness Spa in Kennebunk, we see this pattern every year. And we know that getting through winter here takes more than willpower.

It requires support.

After more than a decade of offering holistic wellness in Southern Maine, we’ve learned that when people say:

  • “I don’t have the time”

  • “I just need to get through…”

  • “I’ll take care of myself once x, y, z…”

What they often mean is:

  • “I don’t know how to slow down.”

  • “I’m not sure what I need.”

  • “I can’t seem to let go.”

So we’ve identified the most common winter burnout patterns and curated spa experiences to support each one.

As winter winds down, take a moment to see where you land.

1. The Perpetual Giver

“I’ll take care of myself after everyone else is taken care of.”

Your nervous system is constantly responding—to people, responsibilities, and demands—while your own reserves run empty.

You’ve heard it before: you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Recommended Reset:
—> 90-Min Integrative Massage
A dedicated space to receive, release, and finally let go of the weight you’ve been carrying. Our expert team holds the space, you don’t have to.

2. The Weathered Warrior

“I just need to get through the winter.”

Chronic stress shows up physically: tight jaw, shallow breathing, dull skin, persistent tension.

Pushing through may feel productive…but it’s not sustainable.

Recommended Reset:
—> Dual Experience: FIR Sauna + Massage or Facial
Start with 30 minutes in our Far Infrared Sauna to warm the body, calm the nervous system, and prepare for deeper, more effective bodywork or skincare.

3. The Tension Collector

“I have too much tension to resolve in one session.”

When stress becomes habitual, the body holds onto it—layer by layer. Winter stagnation can deepen that pattern.

Recommended Reset:
—> 90-Min Immersion Massage
An herbal-infused, deeply therapeutic session designed to release built-up tension. For best results, consider a series of three sessions and a personalized recovery plan.

4. The Chronically Compressed

“I want to make time, but I don’t have the time.”

Here’s the truth: regulating your nervous system doesn’t take time, it gives it back.

When stress is high, everything feels harder. Clarity and energy follow restoration.

Recommended Reset:
—> 30-Min FIR Sauna Session
Our most efficient, high-impact reset for busy schedules. Simple, effective, and deeply restorative.

5. The Serious Go-Getter

“I’m exhausted, but I don’t know how to slow down.”

Being in constant overdrive trains your nervous system to stay there. Slowing down isn’t automatic, it’s a skill.

And it can be relearned.

Recommended Reset:
—> 90-Min Infrared Recovery Massage
A deeply restorative session designed to support recovery on a cellular level while guiding the body into a true downshift.

6. The Hibernator

“I love self-care. I’ve just been putting it off since… October.”

You haven’t missed your chance.

But what you need now likely isn’t a quick fix, it’s a full exhale.

Integrative massage at the fifth om kennebunk maine

Recommended Reset:
—> 60-Min Elevated Facial + 30-Min Herbal Foot Soak
A grounding, full-body reset that brings you back into yourself—calm, clear, and reconnected.

7. The Independent Stoic

“I’ve never really considered massage or wellness support.”

You don’t need to “believe” in bodywork for it to work.

The nervous system responds to warmth, skilled touch, and stillness, whether you expect it to or not.

Recommended Reset:
—> 60-Min Holistic Bodywork (Massage, Cupping, or Himalayan Salt Stones)
Clear, focused, and effective. No fluff, just results.
