Your Skin Has Been Working Hard This Summer

There are certain things we come to expect this time of year: cookouts, beach walks, more time at the park… Nearly all of it revolves around being outdoors. With our long New England winters, we happily accept summer's invitation to spend more time outside.

And that means our skin is out there too.

Over the past few weeks, we've noticed a common thread among many of the clients coming in for facials. Whether they're local or visiting for a few days, their skin is often asking for the same thing: a chance to recover.

Most often, it's simply the accumulation of a season well spent.

Sunscreen layered on and reapplied throughout the day. Salt water. Chlorine. Wind. Air conditioning. Long drives. Less water than we'd normally drink. More sun than we realize. Even the excitement of summer itself, with its later nights and fuller schedules, can leave our skin feeling a little depleted.

Sometimes that shows up as dryness, tightness, or minor inflammation. Sometimes it's congestion that seems to appear out of nowhere. Other times, skin simply looks a little dull or feels more reactive than usual.

None of this is unusual. In fact, it's exactly what we'd expect to see in July in Maine.

What We're Seeing in the Treatment Room This Summer

One thing we often remind clients is that healthy skin requires that we pay attention to its changing needs. We don't necessarily need another serum or an entirely new skincare routine, for that matter. We simply need a reset, and that can come in a variety of forms.

Summer is a season of protection. We wear more sunscreen, seek shade when we can, and do our best to protect against the sun's effects. That's all important. But there's another part of summer skincare that sometimes gets overlooked as our calendars fill up: restoration.

Just as our bodies appreciate a slower morning after a busy weekend, our skin benefits from an opportunity to reset.

Quiet spa space at The Fifth Om holistic wellness spa

That's one of the reasons we love our Elevated Facials this time of year. Every facial begins with an assessment of what's happening that day, because no two complexions walk through our door exactly alike. One person may need deep hydration after a week at the beach. Another may benefit from gently lifting away sunscreen buildup and congestion. Someone else may simply need an hour to slow down while their skin receives thoughtful, personalized care.

You may have noticed that before your facial even begins, we spend a few minutes talking. What does your skin need today? What do you love in a facial? What don't you love in a facial? How have you been feeling lately? Those conversations matter because they help us tailor every treatment to the person in front of us rather than following the exact same routine every time.

Our role is to meet you (and your skin!) where you’re at.

If you've noticed your skin feeling a little different this summer, you're certainly not alone. In many ways, that's simply evidence of a season being fully lived.

Sometimes the best thing you can do isn't add something new. It’s to give your skin the opportunity to recover.

Resoration looks different for everyone. We recently wrote about how restoration can benefit the body through massage, and summer skincare is simply another part of caring for yourself seasonally.

Throughout the rest of the summer, we'll be sharing more observations from our treatment rooms, answering common skincare questions, and offering practical tips for caring for your skin through the season. We hope you'll follow along.

And if your skin has been telling you it could use a little attention, we'd love to welcome you in for a personalized facial here at The Fifth Om in Kennebunk.

Dermaplaning at The Fifth Om: A Holistic Ritual for Radiant Skin

Dermaplaning is one of our most-loved advanced enhancements, not simply because of the immediate glow it creates, but because it supports healthy skin in a gentle, effective way.

Included as part of our Elevated Facial, dermaplaning pairs beautifully with our holistic approach to skincare, revealing brighter, smoother skin while enhancing the benefits of the botanically active products that follow.

We see dermaplaning as an invitation to begin again. By gently removing what no longer serves your skin, we create space for a healthier, more radiant complexion to emerge. As an added benefit, skincare products absorb more effectively and makeup often applies more smoothly afterward.

A Gentle Approach to Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is often described simply as a form of exfoliation. We see it as something more—a gentle unveiling of your skin's freshest, healthiest layer.

Using a sterile surgical scalpel, your esthetician carefully glides across the surface of the skin to remove dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (commonly known as peach fuzz). The treatment leaves skin feeling exceptionally smooth, looking noticeably brighter, and better able to absorb the customized skincare products applied throughout your facial.

Rather than relying on aggressive exfoliation, we work with your skin, never against it, creating an experience that feels both effective and deeply restorative.

The Elevated Facial Experience

Dermaplaning is included in our Elevated Facial, where it becomes part of a thoughtfully layered treatment designed to support both skin health and relaxation.

Your experience may include:

  • Double cleansing

  • Gentle exfoliation

  • Dermaplaning

  • Extractions, when appropriate

  • Relaxing facial massage

  • A hydrating botanical mask

  • Customized serums selected for your skin

  • Our signature Tenfold Golden Glow Face Cream

  • SPF protection before you leave

Throughout your treatment, your esthetician incorporates aromatherapy, plant-based skincare, and intentional touch to create an experience that nurtures both your complexion and your nervous system.

Many guests choose dermaplaning every three to four weeks, although your esthetician will recommend a schedule based on your skin, lifestyle, and goals.

Why Guests Choose Dermaplaning

Every dermaplaning treatment at The Fifth Om is customized to your skin, the season, and what your complexion needs that day. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all protocol, we adjust each facial to support healthy, balanced skin over time.

We finish every Elevated Facial with our signature Tenfold Golden Glow Face Cream, a whipped botanical moisturizer created to nourish and support healthy, radiant skin.

We pair dermaplaning with clean, botanical skincare selected to strengthen the skin barrier while delivering visible, lasting results. Our goal isn't simply smoother skin today, it's healthier skin with every visit.

Most importantly, we believe healthy skin and a regulated nervous system belong together. That's why every facial is designed to leave you feeling just as restored as your complexion looks.

A Ritual of Renewal

Dermaplaning isn't simply about removing dead skin cells. It's about creating space for healthy skin to emerge—and giving yourself permission to slow down long enough to receive thoughtful care.

When you arrive at The Fifth Om, you're welcomed with gentle aromatherapy, calming music, and a warm greeting from your esthetician. Every detail, from the warmth of the towels to the aftercare guidance you take home, is thoughtfully considered.

If your skin feels dull, textured, or simply ready for a fresh start, we'd love to welcome you in. Dermaplaning is included with our Elevated Facial, creating a restorative experience that leaves your skin smoother, brighter, and ready to receive everything that follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dermaplaning make hair grow back thicker?
No. Dermaplaning removes fine vellus hair (aka peach fuzz) at the skin's surface, but it doesn't change the structure, color, or growth pattern of the hair. As it grows back, it will feel and appear the same as it did before treatment.

Who is a good candidate for dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a wonderful option for many skin types, especially if you're experiencing dullness, uneven texture, or dry, flaky skin. It's also a favorite before weddings, vacations, or special events because it leaves skin exceptionally smooth and radiant.

Your esthetician will always evaluate your skin and recommend whether dermaplaning is the right choice for you that day.

Are there times when dermaplaning isn't recommended?

Yes. Dermaplaning may not be appropriate if you have:

  • Active acne or inflamed breakouts

  • An active cold sore

  • Open wounds or irritated skin

  • A recent sunburn

  • Certain skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area

  • Recently used prescription-strength retinoids or other products that have left your skin unusually sensitized

If you're unsure, don't worry. We'll assess your skin during your consultation and recommend the treatment that's best for you.

How often should I have dermaplaning?

Most guests enjoy dermaplaning every three to four weeks, allowing time for the skin's natural renewal cycle. Your esthetician may recommend a different schedule based on your skin goals and seasonal needs.

Is there any downtime?

One of the benefits of dermaplaning is that there is little to no downtime. Your skin may appear slightly pink immediately after treatment, but this typically fades quickly. We recommend wearing SPF daily and following the personalized home-care advice provided by your esthetician.

Why is dermaplaning part of the Elevated Facial rather than offered as a standalone service?

Because we believe healthy skin responds best when treatments are part of a thoughtful, whole-skin approach. Rather than simply exfoliating, we prepare, nourish, and replenish the skin before and after dermaplaning using botanical skincare, intentional touch, and customized care. The result is an experience that supports both visible skin health and overall well-being.

Elevated Facial with Facial Cupping at The Fifth Om

Both timeless and innovative, our Elevated Facial now incorporates the art of facial cupping—a gentle, sculpting technique designed to lift, revitalize, and support healthy, radiant skin.

Far more delicate than traditional body cupping, this facial technique does not leave marks or redness. Instead, it works through soft, rhythmic movements that lightly lift the skin, similar to the flow of a gua sha facial massage—deeply relaxing, yet visibly effective.

At The Fifth Om, facial cupping is thoughtfully offered by our Licensed Esthetician, Alivia, as part of her Elevated Facial experience, bringing together ancient practice and modern, results-driven skincare.

How Facial Cupping Works

Using small, soft silicone cups, Alivia gently glides across the surface of the skin to create a light, vacuum-like lift. Each movement is intentional, designed to stimulate circulation while supporting the natural contours of the face.

This technique can help to:
– Boost blood flow
– Encourage lymphatic drainage
– Reduce puffiness, especially around the eyes and jawline
– Support natural collagen production
– Enhance absorption of active skincare ingredients

The result is skin that appears more lifted, sculpted, and luminous, while the experience itself remains deeply calming.

Facial cupping also amplifies the benefits of the clean, botanically formulated products used throughout your facial, allowing each layer to work more effectively. And if you’re curious about how often we recommend coming in for a professional facial, you can read more here.

Winter Wellness in Maine: A Holistic Approach to Rest, Warmth, and Restoration

Winter in Maine calls for us to find a slower rhythm, one with shorter days, colder temperatures, and quieter spaces to retreat. While we go inward, we also have the opportunity to practice receptivity. Receiving the care and nurturance that our body, mind, and spirit needs can push us through the depth of winter.

In Maine, winter is something we work with. And our approach to Winter Wellness at The Fifth Om is similar. Our services become even more about warmth and nervous-system support through Far Infrared (FIR) Sauna, massage therapy with enhancements, and holistic, results-driven skincare.
